The Gold Foil- Eight of Swords

The Gold Foil/Rider-Waite-Smith- Eight of Swords and The Tarot of the Old Path-Eight of Swords, implies a certain amount of fear of change, of moving out of a binding or restricting situation. This is emphasized by the bound person on the Rider-Waite-Smith and the person trapped behind a wall of swords as shown in the Tarot of the Old Path. The character is in a prison of Swords which represent thoughts causing a narrowness and/or restriction of mind along with shortened will power. Many of us know this as being narrow-minded or short sighted.

The positive side of this is that change, no matter how resisted, will soon come. The Good Fortune of Jupiter will show up. What is again implied, is stop wasting time and proceed with change; your scattered efforts will not stop it, only interfere with your wholesome transition.

The Tarot of the Old Path- 8 of Swords

The Thoth Tarot 8 of Swords is called Interference While the Tarot of the Old Path illustrates a young man standing in a circle of eight swords plunged into the ground, to restrict his movements. The color that is used to identify the element of Air, is yellow. Thus, the clothing of the young man is of this color.

He seems defeated, as he is hanging his head, hunching his shoulders, and eyes closed as in resignation.

The Primary meaning of the Tarot of the Old Path 8 of Swords seems to be about a withdrawn personality whose lack of confidence produces a feeling of self-imprisonment.

The Tarot of the Old Path-Eight of Swords gives us the same image of one who is feeling trapped and blinded unable to act. What the person fails to see is that they aren't trapped if they change perspective and look for the door. Crossed arms imply insecurity and/or implies hopelessness. The message here is don't surrender to hopelessness or negativity. You're still breathing, so where there is a will there is a way. Let's say you've made some mistakes that have gotten you to this point. Fear not, for you have the skills to get you out of this situation. Remember, Wisdom is 50% error, and 50% correction. If you can think up the error, you can think up the solution. I AM Wisdom.

When 8 of Swords is thrown during a reading, the querent is experiencing:

  • Confusion, and a feeling of being trapped, isolated by oppressive ideas.
  •  Feeling trapped or ashamed, which are the beginnings of recognizing the need for change and moving on ward with your life.
  • The mental dissolution or loss of faith in situations or ideas is a sure sign of progress beyond the old, just take a step in another direction.
  • The mind is saying," your perspectives no longer serve your life motion, so new ideas will soon be presented."

If reversed, it implies:

  • Confusion.
  • Mental blocks.
