Radiant: Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot-Eight of Wands

Again the Rider-Waite-Smith 8 of Wands card is laid out for more of a mundane reading or divination, masking the more esoteric meanings. On a blue sky and lush landscape background, Waite displays 8 leaf sprouting wands (implying fertility), as if suspended or falling. Again, the phallic force of Mercury is shown in the shape of the wands, and the swift movement of growth is shown in the sprouting twigs and leaves. The only reference to the Universal Element of Fire, is the sunny sky. Obviously Waite, still holding to his oath of secrecy, didn't spend great effort in designing this card, and it is simplicity itself. Since, the wands are flying , swift energy can be determined from this image. Hence, a swift outcome to the issue of divination is implied.

B.O.T.A. Tarot- 8 of Wands

The B.O.T.A. 8 of Wands, is minimalistic, but a little more esoteric as well. The color of Fire, are the red/gold wands. The "white" diamond tip, is Kether the Great Self, and the Dark diamonds represent the manifested world. Hence, "As above , so below" is entertained as an idea here. All 8 of the Wands radiate from a central order, forming a 8 pointed star of Venus and/or the Babylonian Ishtar, with energy radiating outward in "all directions". This can imply a scattering of energy, as produced by too many associations to one thought. Hence, is a brain swiftly going through many thoughts about one issue and even hasty action produced by dogmatic or indoctrinated programing.

Here also is implied, swiftness as in an express messenger often seen as Mercury, the messenger of the gods. Hence, great haste, great hope, speed towards and end that promises assured felicity. That which is on the move or even arrows of love. However, there is also a suggestion of over thinking an issue to the point of no real focus.

When the 8/eight of wands is thrown during a divination, it implies:

  • Ideas.
  • Movement.
  • Quick communication.
  • Flexibility.
  • Expansion.
  • Intellectual power.
  • Unexpected impulse.
  • Mental activity.

If reversed:

  • Vehemence.
  • Jealousy.
  • Hastiness.
  • Superficiality (no real focus).
