Radiant: Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, Knight of Cups

Both the Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) and the Manara Tarot-Knight of Water are again focused on the more mundane characteristics of this Personality. The winged helm on the RWS Knight suggests the Eagle of Higher Scorpio (Scorpio has three images, scorpion, serpent, and eagle. The lowest being scorpion) and the languid river suggests water, the element of the card. The Knight is holding a cup before him/her and is riding at an easy pace. On the Rider-Waite- Smith Card, the slightest hint of his passionate- fiery nature may be seen in the red flowers of his Surcoat and the sunbaked hills in the background. The river flowing through the scoured landscape may imply that the river/or consciousness, is not always languid and may be subject to violent overflows.

The Milo Manara Erotic Tarot- Knight of Water

The Erotic Tarot depicts a knight who has left his charger and is halfway immersed in a lily pond. What this has to do with erotism may stump the viewer. However, Knights have become a romantic figure in western culture and Water is the universal element of this card, which relates to self-consciousness, intuition, and emotion. The water Lily or Lotus is a sacred flower that represents the Goddess/Creatrix. The fact that his headgear is phallic shaped, and the water stands for the Yoni, we have one phallic- yoni combination that is often presented in Hindu sculpture.

The Knight or Prince is noted for his tempest like purity of emotions. So, I guess, by immersing the knight in the lily pond, expressed the fact that he is "immersed in emotions" and is very intuitive.

The divined meanings applied to this card by Milo Manara are:

  • Mystic.
  • Knight errant.
  • Purity.
  • Chasity.

With the Astrological meanings of:

  • Understanding.
  • Gentleness.
  • Kindness.
  • Hypersensitivity.

On the personality Tarot Wheel-The knights are called Princes in Thoth Tarot and on the Wheel.

The name of "Knight" does not denote gender-just action. based on Sun sign.

S/he is known to give extraordinarily little of her/himself, which ironically is part of their attraction. This ability to be detached from others is often used in the Knight's advantage, which can also make such a personality quite thoughtless about other people's sensitive feelings. S/he really is a master of emotional manipulation. Rather than be ruled by emotion, s/he can focus emotional power, making this knight charming, diplomatic, and sought after, as s/he stimulates emotions in others. This Knight is a "lover" making this one capricious and elusive in relationships; Even though s/he likes to "play around", s/he is a very loving person. S/he just doesn't believe any person belongs to another and sees them as playmates in the dance of life. Therefore, when the play becomes "serious", this one mounts their steed and moves on to the next great romantic conquest.

To those who place no strictures on this behavior, s/he is a particularly good friend, but this one is an idealist afraid of being hurt, and therefore, avoids conflict. Ironically, s/he may generate tremendous friction by doing so. S/he loves music and art, but let others put in the effort of creating them. If the Knight represents your personality core on the Tarot Personality birth wheel, you've been chasing feelings, more than you should and need to take time to nurture your existing friendships and/or relationships.

As I've said before: The Knights of the Rider-Waite and the Manara Erotic tarot decks represent the coming and going of an event or person.

When thrown in divination, the Knight of cups or Knight of Water implies that either the querent has or is familiar with an important person in their life, who may come and go, whose characteristics are likened to the Prince of Cups:

  • The morality or moral characteristic of such a person would encase subtlety, secret violence, and craft.
  • Being also an artist in all his ways, he would be intensely secret.
  •  The calm and imperturbable surface he displays masks his most intense passion.
  •  S/he accepts only external influences that aid him in his secret designs.
  • This Knight's conscience is not that of an ordinary person, for it is of a more impersonal nature, making him suspect and distrusted by acquaintances.
  •  S/he is perfectly ruthless and inspires fear in those that distrust him.
  • This one's abilities are immense, going beyond ordinary senses into realms of the subtle. He is, however, fluid, and volatile as well, and does not care to work in harness.
  • The fact that this card is Libra going over into Scorpio, suggests great volatility, as this influence implies tremendous power, energy, and weight.
  • Such a person must be well mated, with goodwill and sincerity, for loyalty is all important to keep their good nature. When this Is so, they are extremely romantic, sensual, and generous to a fault and are great lovers.

If the placement of the Knight of cups is such in a reading it suggests an event rather than a personality.

As far as events go,

  • This is a personal process of the quiet inner aspect of the male principle where self-reflection, inner meditative peace and awareness are being experienced by the querent (The person the reading is for).
  •  Here the event of Mind is turned towards deep feelings and artistic visions with the necessary passion to do them but with the secrecy that may prevent it.
  • Here a person is completely involved in emotional sensation, psychic awareness, and spiritual awareness. All of which they have in abundance.

If reversed when thrown:

  • Trickery.
  • Artifice.
  • Subtlety.
  • Swindling.
  • Duplicity.
  • Fraud.
