Radiant: Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot- Ten of Wands

B.O.T.A. Tarot- 10 of Wands

The Rider-Waite- Smith Tarot- Ten of Wands, depicts a man oppressed by the weight of the ten wands/staves that he carries. The image seems simple enough. However, this is a card of many significances making some of the readings hard to harmonize. Simply put, it is oppression, but also fortune, gain, and any kind of success of these concepts. The fertile Staves or Wands, actually produce these things. However, it is also a card of illusion, disguise, and perfidy. There is often a great burden to possessions, where one thinks they own them, but in reality, they are owned by them.

The Rider-Waite-Smith Ten of Wands card suggests a heavy burden. One man, trying to control the Ten Wands as a bundle of excessive weight. This image implies, cruelty, malice, over-bearing force, lots of energy being applied and injustice. Much as a slave forced to do very hard labor. Again a very mundane version of the most complex Sephiroth-Malkuth (the simplest being Kether). On the Tree of Life, the number 10 refers to Malkuth-the Earth, and it is the most crystallized form of the alchemical element Fire. This is Fire in its lowest form, so it is without a guiding intelligence, thus it is in its most destructive form. It is up to us to give this powerful force guidance, as it is the groundwork of all Passions that have been known to "run-a-muck". The Tens generally show fixed and completed force. This is similar to the Nines of Tarot, as a matter is thoroughly and definitely determined but the Tens ultimate it and carry it out, ending a cycle.

B.O.T.A. Tarot- 10 of Wands

The Builders of The Adytum-10 of Wands, is again minimalistic in its presentation, but more Qabalistic in its meaning, than the Rider-Waite-Smith version of this card. Above, we have the Red and Gold Wands formed into the Supernal Triangle/upper triangle of the Tree of Life (Kether-Chokmah-Binah). While the 4th-5th-7th and 8th Sephira all form a square. A Square is not only the image for the Realm of Manifestation, it is also and enclosure, that oppresses "energy within". On the Tree of Life, that Energy being oppressed is from the Solar Self (6th Sephira-Tiphareth-Beauty).

This square of manifestation, not only keeps the data flow from the Solar Self (Soul) from getting to the body, it is also often necessary to "oppress" a certain amount of energy, like a capacitor, before releasing it all at once to rapidly push forth a new creation. Hence, the 8th-7th and 10th Sephiroth form the bottom trinity of Wands. This then leaves the 9th Sephiroth-Yesod (Foundation), the Sephiroth of the Moon, as central energy source, a reflection of the Solar Self. Hence, illusion (manifestation is a word that means "illusion") is now created in the 10th Sephirotic World of Malkuth-Kingdom. This card would definitely fulfill the image of a "Closed Mind" and/or the illusion of "righteousness", both of which are oppression and a burden to the carrier.

During Divination, if the TEN/10 OF WANDS is thrown, it is implied that:

  • They must stop their present self-repression, and create a new motion ; or if it shows in the reading that someone or something, is responsible for the oppression, they must leave, and change.
  •  There is an overbearing strength being placed on the personality that will make it fight for its survival, precipitating revenge and injustice in the process.
  •  Will applied to selfish and material ends.
  • Generosity, self-sacrifice and often disinterest. But caution must be applied once again, as often self-sacrifice becomes Altruism, which is another form of Superiority and Martyrdom, which become oppression in their own rite.
  • If the Ten of Wands is  reversed , it suggests:
  •  Ill will, lying, malice, slander, envy, obstinacy, swiftness in evil.
  •  Violence as a form of sexuality.
